How I long for this…

I’ve been watching/listening to a lot of material by Kata and the Blaze just lately. If you haven’t heard of them, have a search on YouTube and drop them a comment.

Reading about their work, and how they started out has just put a longing back in me that I thought I’d lost. I want more than anything to be a musician professionally. I love to write songs, I feel like I’m doing something meaningful each time I do. For the past three years, I’ve really struggled to see the point of me writing – I mean, how many female singer/songwriters/guitarists are there online right now? We’re like grains of sand on the beach.

I really struggled with my identity as a musician, even as a person, in my years at university. It’s only now it’s beginning to become clear to me: I may be like a lot of other people, but I’m not like everyone else. I’m not trying to emulate anyone, so surely I am still unique? And a sense of uniqueness is what is required by any record label looking to sign an artist. That’s not to say you need to be crazy to the point of being unmarketable, but you do have to be yourself.

As a result, I’ve decided it’s time to get a professional opinion on my music. I recently sent an MP3 of ‘Sleeping Beast’ in to BA Music Group who are currently accepting unsolicited material (shh!). Perhaps I’ll get a response in a few weeks. It would be so edifying to get a response from someone that knows what they’re doing. I’m so used to comments like, “your good (yes, spelled like that),” and “OMG, you should totally be on American Idol!” I’m sorry, but you might as well tell me I have a nose or arms. Completely unhelpful and un-insightful. I’m not after compliments! I want critique, I really do. I’m not asking for insults, because they’re as inane as the, “do you has a record deal?” sort of lines. Having said that, a bit of aggro would be nice at the moment. No such thing as bad publicity, and all that!

So, in short, I want to start taking things seriously (again) and really dig deep into the workings of the industry. Throw a spanner in the works, so to speak, in order to seize up the machine long enough to establish myself as ‘up and coming’.

So, if you’re from A&R and you’re reading this, please get in contact with me. I have a bone to pick with you!
